Types of Torque Wrenches and their use

To apply a set amount of force around the axis of a nut or bolt, torque wrenches are used. They are mostly in the form of socket wrench. Torque wrenches are very useful in situations where tightening of bolts and nuts is crucial.  Torque wrenches are different from other types of wrenches because they can maintain or control the force applied, which ensures that the bolt or nut is neither loose nor too tight.

There are different types of wrenches with different designs-

• Simple Torque Wrench- This is like normal torque wrench with an analog needle on it. When the force is applied by the wrench to tighten the bolts, the needle will move and will show the amount of force that is being applied. They are not ideal for daily usage as simple torque wrench may not show the accurate result because of the exposure of the needle. The needle may bent or move accidently resulting in false results.
• Electronic Torque Wrench- They are similar to the simple torque wrench. The only difference is that instead of having analog needle, it has digital display, which shows the result in numbers. Now the operator can see the amount of force applied in proper number without having any doubt on the accuracy.
• Click Type Torque Wrench- This wrench is considered to be the most sophisticated torque tool because of its calibrated clutch tool mechanism. When the set amount of torque is achieved, the clutch of the tool slips and prevents any more tightening of the bolts.
• No-Hub Torque Wrench- This type of wrench is used by the plumbers to tighten the clamping band on the pipe couplings. The design of the wrench consists of t-handle, one way combination ratchet and a clutch. The wrench is calibrated from the factory only to seal the couplings without causing any damage.
• Hydraulic Torque Wrench- These wrench use hydraulics to tighten the nuts or bolts. These wrenches use predetermined amount of force to avoid over tightening of the bolts. Hydraulic torque wrench is a better choice because of its precise nature. The tightening of bolt is done accurately making it much better option for the people. They are also quieter than the pneumatic wrenches.

There are some characteristics which makes the Hydraulic Torque Wrench different from any other wrenches:

1. Self Ratcheting,
2. Use of Hydraulics only, and
3. Accurate method to know the amount of torque applied.

So, the hydraulic torque wrenches are the perfect wrench for most of the industries because of its high degree of repeatability and high degree of accuracy for the large bolts.
